Listen fans have responded to the festival’s Save The Dates announcement with potential horror, with dates in Sydney and Perth pitted against major sporting events.

While the Melbourne meeting takes place on a public holiday – the eve of the Grand Final before the AFL’s big day – Listen Out heads to Perth, another AFL-enthusiastic city, on Grand Final Day. Meanwhile, the festival takes place in Sydney, an NRL-mad city, on NRL finals day.

Festival promoters confirmed the return of Listen Out last week, with the festival tour heading to Melbourne’s Caribbean Gardens on Friday 27 September, Perth’s HBF Arena on Saturday 28 September, Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds on Saturday 5 October and ending at Sydney’s Centennial. Park on Sunday, October 6.

Listen In is back again this year, taking place at Adelaide’s Ellis Park on Sunday 29 September and Auckland at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart on Friday 4 October.

The announcement of festival dates clashing with the most significant dates on the Australian sporting calendar has sparked concern among punters on social media, but festival organizers are offering solutions for their party- and sport-loving patrons.

“We will be showing the NRL Grand Final in Sydney and the AFL Grand Final in Perth. Each location will have a beer garden with screens, food and drinks showing the games.”

The spokesperson added: “Listening dates are planned well in advance and although we try to avoid such clashes, sometimes they are unavoidable.”

In a statement, Listen Out promoters said of this year’s festival: “It’s been a really tough time for the music festival industry in Australia and we’re excited to be back in 2024, welcoming first-timers and first-time attendees through the gates. “

Last year’s Listen Out featured the biggest lineup in its history, locking in people like Skrillex, Four Tet, Ice Spice, JPEGMAFIA, Mallrat, Lil Uzi Vert, Coi Lerayand stacks more.
