Port Adelaide superstar Zak Butters’ hopes of a late charge in Brownlow Medal contention and playing in Saturday’s clash with Brisbane rest on winning his appeal at the AFL Tribunal tonight. Live from 4pm AEST!

Butters is hoping to overturn a one-match ban handed down for his open palm on GWS midfielder Tom Green during Sunday’s loss to the Power.

The incident was ruled intentional as it was off the ball, low impact and high contact, resulting in a one match suspension.

The Power is expected to argue that Butters initially made contact with Green’s arm, not his head, or will dispute the degree of impact.

“That’s the joke. It’s not a week,” Herald Sun chief football writer Mark Robinson told AFL 360.

“I’ve got his defense: Go punch Jesse Hogan in the face, give it and ‘rest our case.’ Jesse Hogan can punch someone in the face and get fined – and he (Butters) gets a week’s ban for it. They shouldn’t do it, but the precedent has been set.”

In Hogan’s case, the Giants successfully argued that his impact on Carlton’s Lewis Young’s head was negligible after he initially made contact with Young’s arm and landed on his face.

The Power are contesting both the Butters incident and SANFL’s Charlie Dixon’s three-match ban for a hit that concussed an opponent. The last hearing will take place on Wednesday evening.

Butters is a dark contender for the Brownlow, probably on double-digit votes but behind favorites Nick Daicos, Isaac Heeney, Marcus Bontempelli and Max Gawn.
