Villa Terrace is celebrating 100 years with a free public drone light show

Four hundred drones equipped with LED lights will soon illuminate the night sky above Lake Michigan, creating complex, colorful shapes.

The Friends of Villa Terrace Drone Show, Milwaukee’s largest drone show, is July 10, the opening night of the Villa Terrace Art Museum’s Centennial Celebration. The 20-minute show is free and open to the public. Like a fireworks display, it will be visible from a wide area along the lakefront, including McKinley Beach, Back Bay Park, North Point Water Tower and Prospect Avenue. The art museum will also host a glow-in-the-dark viewing party.

“It’s an event designed to reach all of Milwaukee to inspire them to come visit Villa Terrace and see what a spectacular public amenity it is,” said Friends of Villa Terrace member Megan Holbrook, who is leading the drone planning. show and other Centenary events.

The drones will form around 20 different images, including elements of the Villa Terrace, such as the Hermes statue that greets guests in the villa’s inner courtyard and a koi fish like those in the fish pond in the Villa’s Renaissance Garden. The imagery will span at least 600 feet above the lake.

Holbrook’s team worked with local artist Ray Chi to design the show. Chi even created a special soundtrack that will be simulcast on WMSE 91.7 during the show.

Detroit-based Firefly Drones supplied the fleet of two-kilogram drones; a 15-person team of Firefly drone pilots and engineers will produce the show. Together, Chi and the Firefly team put over 200 hours into creating the upcoming performance.
