China accuses the EU of escalating trade frictions

China’s Ministry of Commerce said Friday that the European Union is to blame for escalating trade frictions that could lead to a “trade war.”

“The responsibility rests exclusively on the EU side,” the ministry said in a statement commenting on concerns from the European side about possible escalation of trade frictions.

China does not want to see ongoing trade frictions with the EU, the ministry stressed, noting that the European side “unfortunately” continued to provoke trade disputes.

Since the beginning of this year, the EU has imposed 31 restrictive trade and investment measures against China, 25 of which were trade remedies, seriously undermining China-EU economic and trade cooperation, according to the ministry.

Meanwhile, the ministry said China has demonstrated an open and cooperative attitude and has explicitly sought to resolve issues through dialogue and consultation.

China has always followed World Trade Organization rules and used trade remedies with caution and restraint, the statement said.

In the face of EU protectionism, China is determined to save its legitimate and legal interests and hopes the EU will manage differences through dialogues and prevent trade frictions from escalating, the ministry said.
