Detroit man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend accused

A Detroit man has been charged in connection with the death of his girlfriend, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday.

Jelani Ahmed Shakoor, 40, allegedly shot Alicia Ferguson with a gun after an argument between them escalated, prosecutors said in a news release.

Emergency dispatchers sent police to the scene Monday in the 2200 block of West Grand Boulevard around 3:33 a.m., according to the release.

Police arrived to find Ferguson with a gunshot wound to the neck in the apartment’s bedroom, investigators said. Doctors at the scene pronounced the death of the 35-year-old woman from Detroit.

Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath arraigned Shakoor on Thursday in 36th District Court on charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm while committing a felony and possession of a firearm as a felon.

Shakoor petitioned for a court-appointed attorney and was represented by one during the hearing Thursday, according to online court records.

Records show Ramsey-Heath denied the connection to Shakoor. Shakoor remained mute when asked how he pleaded, so the court entered a not guilty plea.

Records Friday did not list an attorney representing him.

His next court appearances are for probable cause on June 27 and a preliminary examination on July 2, records show.
