The second annual Hooplandia basketball tournament kicks off in West Springfield

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – We are just hours away from the second annual Hooplandia Basketball Tournament in West Springfield.

For the second year in a row, the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield will be filled with competitors and spectators of all ages for what is being called The Northeast’s Ultimate 3-On-3 Basketball Tournament and Festival.

Thursday saw the final preparations being made at the fair as the remaining hoops were raised and the courts received their final touches.

We’re told about 100 teams participated in the inaugural Hooplandia tournament last year, and according to Eastern States Exposition’s Tim Garstka, entries doubled for this year’s tournament.

“We have people coming from all over the country. We have teams coming from Texas and Philadelphia and New Jersey and Nantucket, Mass.,” she says. “So we really attract some people from those outlying areas who want to come to the birthplace of basketball and the Eastern States Exposition and play 3-on-3,” she added.

Festivities meet Hooptacular at 3pm on Friday afternoon.

It will feature skill challenges and other entertainment, including the mayors of Springfield and West Springfield battling it out for bragging rights.

Then there’s the main tournament, which begins with pool play at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

Also keep an eye out for Matt Price, David Horwitz, Taylor Smith and Corey Moquin as they will also battle it out on the court.
