“Why not Ollie Watkins?” talkSPORT’s social media pundits are hot on the heels of England captain Harry Kane

Harry Kane continues to share his views as talkSPORT’s Gabby Agbonlahor and Darren Ambrose spar with the England captain.

Kane scored in the Lions’ 1-1 draw against Denmark in their second Euro 2024 group game, becoming only the third English player to score at four major tournaments.

However, not everyone loved the Bayern Munich striker, with some questioning what else he contributed to the rest of the game.

Manager Gareth Southgate eventually substituted Kane in the 70th minute for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Watkins looked lively for the time he was on the pitch, making decent runs in behind the Danish defence, although he failed to make an impact on the score.

But some have argued that Kane’s performance is a clear indicator that he should not start the Three Lions’ next game against Slovenia, including England legend Stuart Pearce.

Ambrose, however, thinks such a suggestion is absolutely ridiculous and took to X to share exactly what he made of the debate.

He wrote: “I don’t care what anyone says you don’t get your best scorer. People love to criticize – Harry Kane is England’s match winner so don’t take him out. (Gary) Lineker and (Alan) Shearer were similar (forward) players and they say take it down, short memories.”

But his fellow TalkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor was not convinced by his argument.

“So Kane plays 90 minutes regardless of every game?” replied Ambrose on X, adding a crying emoji.

And Ambrose was quick to defend his point

He replied, “100 percent. Who do you want to have a chance to go down in the 90th minute who has a better chance of scoring than any other player in the England squad? Scorers score even when the team plays badly, surely you can’t agree with that?”

Furious Jason Cundy hails England’s 1-1 draw with Denmark ‘worst performance under Gareth Southgate’ as he reveals brutal

But the former Aston Villa striker was pleased with the response.

“Yes, but when he’s ineffective can’t he just stay on the pitch? We have a striker in Watkins who has 19 goals in the Premier League. We need to make changes mate, nobody deserves to play every minute if they don’t perform! ” wrote Agbonlahor.

And while Ambrose admitted Watkins certainly had a place on the field, he will not be swayed by his arguments for the England captain.

“Coate, I’m sure Watkins should use him, but put him alongside Kane, not for Kane, the goals will come with those two up, especially when we need a goal, Kane has been ineffective, but still our best creator/scorer, let him create. for Watkins, Kane No.10 Bellingham to No.8, we win.” wrote Ambrose.

Agbonlahor addressed the duo’s heated exchange on talkSPORT Breakfast the following morning, explaining that he believed what England lacked in their lackluster performance was some energy in attack.

“I talked to Darren Ambrose a bit on Twitter.”

“Look when Watkins came in, making room for Bellingham at the back and had a chance on goal. Sometimes when you play the way we play, you need runners.

“It’s like we’re all giving Trent (Alexander-Arnold) a hard time, but he gets the ball and everybody stands up. Trent needs running backs.

“He needs (Anthony) Gordon to run back, Saka to run back, Watkins to run back. We all step up. It’s easy to defend. So for me, I’d definitely play Watkins. Give it a shot – and these players are hungry!”

Despite their shortcomings, England currently sit top of their group with one last game against Slovenia to play at 8pm on Tuesday 25 June, live on talkSPORT.

The Three Lions know that a win will secure their place not only in the knockout stages, but also at the top of their group.

But when England line up in Cologne on Tuesday, much of the focus will be on Southgate’s starting line-up as he reveals whether skipper Kane has really nailed it or not.
