Independence Lake Beach is closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels

If you’re looking to beat the lake heat this weekend, you’ll want to avoid a Washtenaw County beach.

Lake Independence Beach is closed due to high E. coli levels. This closure applies to swimming only; other forms of recreation are allowed, such as boating.

The high levels of bacteria were discovered during routine testing. The beach, which is located in Whitmore Lake’s Independence Lake County Park, will remain closed until tests show the water is safe for swimming.

If you think you have become ill after swimming in the water, contact the Washtenaw County Division of Environmental Health at 734-222-3800.

The beach is not the only one closed on weekends.

Memorial Park Beach in St. Clair Shores is also closed due to bacteria levels as of Friday morning.

Beach closure updates are posted in real time here.
