Meals on Wheels needs volunteers to deliver meals around Tulsa

Meals On Wheels hand-delivers prepared meals to people’s homes to make sure everyone in need has something to eat, but the organization needs more volunteers to help cover the entire Tulsa area.

While loading the car with dozens of meals, volunteer Robert Odell prepared for the weekly deliveries.

“I’ve done this route a few times, so I know who to go to and what order they’re in and everything, so, okay, we’re going to go to her first,” Odell said.

For the past two and a half years, he has helped out every Friday morning.

“Delivering meals to those who deserve and need it is just a blessing to me,” Odell said.

There’s one stop on his route that he’s excited about: visiting the Morgan family. Sally Morgan lives with her husband.

“I can’t go to the store; we don’t drive anymore. I can get someone to pick us up or I can order things, but it has to be something simple that we can throw in the microwave,” Sally said. .

She said the weekly visit with Robert is something she looks forward to.

“The volunteers are absolutely unbelievably the best, he’s so good, and when he asks how you’re doing, he means it,” said Sally.

As the Morgans ate their meal, Robert said it wasn’t always an easy task.

“Every week, there’s more routes where they need extra help and stuff like that. Somebody can’t be there and what have you,” Odell said of the need for more volunteers.

But as he waits for the extra hands, Robert knows the Morgans have a permanent place on his trail.

“Well take care, thanks, see you next week.”

Meals on Wheels is hosting a volunteer fair on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at its main office.
