Spillway Bridge & Co. to reopen under new owners

Spillway Bridge & Co., a live music venue and taproom in downtown Marion, is reopening.

On Saturday, the new owners of the gathering place at 93 S. Main St. announced on Facebook that it would reopen after being closed for more than a month.

“The Spillway Bridge & Co will be re-opening soon,” the Facebook post said. “The Spillway will be reopened under new ownership by Josh and Erica Abernathy, who also own Lincoln Social in Lincolnton, NC.”

Lincoln Social in Lincolnton is a similar business, offering live music, craft beer, wine and cocktails.

Josh Abernathy said work to reopen the Marion Spillway has only just begun

“We’re just in the beginning stages, working on getting all the permits,” he told The McDowell News on Saturday. “We definitely want to get the word out and get the community excited.”

Abernathy said he and his wife Erica plan to bring the Spillway back to the way it used to be. In addition to drinks, Spillway offered food to its patrons.

“Basically, we’re going to reopen The Spillway the same way it was before the closure,” he said. “We’ll have live music a few nights a week and other entertainment on other nights. We plan to offer a wide selection of bourbons and other spirits along with beer and wine offerings. We may not open the kitchen initially, but there are plans to offer a dish in the future. We are very excited to bring The Spillway back to Marion.”

Abernathy said he hopes to open the restaurant in late July.

In May, Spillway Bridge & Co. announced on Facebook that it will be closing permanently. Rossi Martin was the previous owner.

Spillway opened its doors in late 2017. Its stage featured music including jazz, folk, blues, Americana, bluegrass, hip hop and rock. Musicians, both local and regional, came to Marion to perform.

The closing post in May hinted that something new could be on the horizon for the business.

“Stay tuned for What’s New at 93 South Main!! Cheers!!” the May Facebook post said.
