“Numerous police patrols” are responding to the incident at the Adelaide shopping centre

SA Police are responding to an incident at the Westfield Marion shopping center in Adelaide’s south with a social media report suggesting an armed offender is on the loose.

A man has been arrested after police and the bomb squad carried out a major operation in Melbourne city centre. The 33-year-old man was arrested after an incident in Collins St after noon on Wednesday, according to police. The incident is believed to be related to an ongoing investigation by a fire and explosives squad. The street between Queen and Elizabeth St in both directions has since reopened after being closed for the police operation. Police have confirmed that the matter is not terror-related and there is no immediate threat to the safety of the community.

In a statement, authorities said “numerous police patrols” were on the scene to respond to an incident in the main shopping center around 3:30 p.m.

Unconfirmed reports on social media suggest shoppers were evacuated and a lockdown imposed, with police believed to be hunting an armed criminal.

SA Police said they would provide more information as it became available.
