FARGO, ND (KVRR) — Mayor Tim Mahoney was assisted at Fargo City Hall by two students who are winners of the “Mayor for a Day” essay contest.

Fargo Public Schools third and fifth graders were asked the question: What would you do if you were mayor for a day?

Nathan Asgedom recently completed fifth grade at Kennedy Elementary, while Alex Zhao completed third grade at Longfellow Elementary.

They got to visit city hall and share their winning essays during the city commission meeting.

Asgedom says: “I would also like to lower taxes for small businesses so that businesses can grow and provide new employment opportunities. And another thing I would add is if I were mayor I would ban smoking in Fargo.”

“If someone has an idea that could help a person’s life, I would use all my power to make the idea a reality. If someone needs me, I would be there as a friend and leader,” says Zhao.

Mayor Mahoney congratulated and thanked Commissioner Arlette Preston for her 16 years of public service.

She will be replaced on the commission next month by Michelle Turnberg.
