Officials remind you of basic safety tips for July 4th – Newstalk KZRG

(City of Joplin) — As Independence Day approaches, citizens must keep safety in mind while handling fireworks to avoid any problems. To provide a safer environment for families, neighbors and visitors to our community, the city reminds everyone to follow all regulations involving the sale and discharge of fireworks in Joplin. We also remind citizens to be good neighbors and remove any trash or debris from fireworks that they throw away.

Fireworks can only be sold in the City of Joplin on July 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. They can only be downloaded on July 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th between 12:00pm and 11:00pm in Joplin.

The city prohibits the sale, possession or discharge of bottle rockets within the city. Any glass rockets found will be confiscated immediately. Any variation of these rules may result in appropriate fines and confiscation of all fireworks owned. Chinese lanterns are also prohibited for use in Joplin.

The city also encourages residents to clean up their filming locations to remove debris and trash from our community. Fireworks should be cooled before being thrown. To ensure that the items are extinguished, the remaining firework barrels can be sprayed with water or dipped in a bucket before disposing of them.

Other firework safety tips include:

  • Think SAFETY first when discharging fireworks.
  • Follow all manufacturer’s instructions.
  • It is recommended that children do not use fireworks. However, if they do, always have adult supervision.
  • Only discharge fireworks in an unobstructed area with short grass or a non-combustible surface.
  • Clear the area of ​​any trash, wood piles, yard debris, etc.
  • Make sure everyone is a safe distance from the unloading area.
  • Immediately have a method of extinguishing the devices, i.e. a garden hose, bucket of water or a fire extinguisher.
  • DO NOT HANDLE DUDS. They may disappear after a few minutes.
  • Always use punks to light the fireworks. Using lighters or matches can cause fireworks to ignite prematurely.
  • Do not hold a firework in your hand and light it.
  • Do not throw fireworks at or near people, houses or other structures, flammable or combustible objects.
