A Utah man allegedly set Sandy’s house on fire, with a woman still inside

SANDY, Utah (ABC4) — A Utah man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly setting fire to a Sandy home with a woman still inside, according to the Sandy Police Department.

Travis Don Anderson, 51, was booked into the Salt Lake County Metropolitan Jail on one felony count of first-degree aggravated arson, two felony counts of third-degree aggravated assault and one felony count of violating an order protective.

Anderson allegedly got into a verbal argument with one of Sandy’s residents, which escalated when he went outside and grabbed a gas can. According to court documents, Anderson allegedly doused the victim’s leg with gasoline and threatened to burn the house down.

Court documents say the victim then left the home and called law enforcement. While on the phone, she noticed smoke coming from the house. The victim’s mother, who lived with her, was in the basement at the time of the alleged fire.

“Gasoline was poured on the floor of every room of the house, knowing that the victim’s mother lived in the basement,” Sandy police reported in an affidavit. “The lighting of the fire created a substantial risk of bodily harm to the victim and his mother.”

Sandy police reported that the victim’s mother was found in the basement and safely removed from the home, unharmed. The Sandy Police Department told the home is now “uninhabitable” due to significant smoke damage from the fire.

Anderson was found a short time later near Sandy’s home and taken into custody. Court documents show he is being held without bail pending a preliminary hearing.

Allegations are just allegations. All persons arrested are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
