Eventide returns with a series of free weekly concerts in Victoria’s Centennial Square

Starting July 3rd, the Eventide Music Series returns for its 11th year of bringing free, multi-genre music to Centennial Square in downtown Victoria!

Eventide means the last part of the day, which is a fitting title for this series of concerts that Victorians look forward to every year as they take place from 6pm to about 10pm every Wednesday all summer long.

The series began as a collaboration with CFUV, UVic’s campus community radio station, and the City of Victoria. More recently the Victoria Beer Society has also come on board as a partner and is always there serving drinks to attendees so CFUV can just focus on the music.

According to CFUV Music Director Troy Lemberg, Eventide is meant to provide a large, prominent outdoor stage for bands and artists who may not have the opportunity to perform at other festivals.

Lemberg says there are certain events run by the City that are genre-specific or will feature bands that fit within certain parameters.

“We wanted to provide opportunities for local bands and also genres that might not normally have this kind of platform just for the general public,” he explained.

Each separate Eventide event features bands that are hand-picked by different show promoters from around the city, all specializing in different types of music.

Some book heavy metal acts, while others book DJs and dance events. Eventide has both and everything in between.

This year, the promoters and bands playing at Eventide are:

  • July 3 – NDN Cowboys Presents: Aladean Kheroufi, Layten Kramer and Posh Coat
  • July 10 – Near Dark features: Fred Cracklin, CSTMR, city & io and cooplore
  • July 17th – Resonance Collective presents: Arch Nemesis, Enereph, Night Terra, CBD and Tucy
  • July 24th – Gigtoria presents: Iron Lung, Bootlicker, Woolworm and Noose Sweat
  • July 31 – Good Party & Hot Local Singles In Your Playlist features: Black Ends, Gadfly, Dastard & Bong Witch
  • August 7 – Cavity Curiosity Shop presents: Petrification, Hedonist, Torrefy, Liminal Shroud and Heliophage
  • August 14th – Fifty Fifty Arts Collective presents: Devours, Future Star, KMVP and EVIL!
  • August 21 – CFUV Presents: Immaculate Machine (reunion headliner and Kathryn Calder’s former band), Teenage Art Scene and Luna Land (headliner still awaited)

Lemberg says he’s especially excited to see Woolworm perform, as they’ve become one of his favorite bands over the years, along with Immaculate Machine.

He explained that Immaculate Machine was a staple of the all-ages scene, with one member, Kathryn Calder, going on to join New Pornographers, who were one of Canada’s biggest indie bands in the early 2000s.

Lemberg noted that Victoria’s Eventide Music Series sets itself apart from others by allowing all members of the community to join in the fun and listen to music; adding that where others put up barriers to keep out members of the homeless community and minors, Eventide welcomes them.
