A portion of MO Highway 291 was closed in Independence after a crack was discovered in the roadway

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A mine collapse may be to blame for a roadway crack that closed parts of Missouri 291 in Independence.

The Missouri Department of Transportation closed the highway for about a mile from Truman Road north to US 24.

MoDOT crews discovered the crack while inspecting a recent mine collapse in the area.

Crews have made the decision to close the road until further notice.

The intersection at MO 291 and E. Salisbury Road will remain open to motorists.

Motorists traveling north on MO 291 will be able to exit at Truman Road and those traveling south will be able to exit at US 24.

The City of Independence recommends using Lee’s Summit Road as an alternate route until MO 291 reopens.
