Police are looking for the man from St.  Louis suspected of double homicide in Springfield

The Springfield Police Department is searching for a suspect in a double homicide over the holiday weekend. The Springfield Homicide Unit identified Jeffrey Garrett, 39, of St. Louis as a suspect, although he is not currently in custody, according to an SPD press release.

On Friday, July 5, officers responded to a report of a man who had been shot around 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Chestnut Street. Once on scene, officers found 46-year-old Jack Osborne and 44-year-old Melissa Smith, who was previously identified as Melissa Evans, with gunshot wounds. Osborne died at the scene. Smith was taken to the hospital and later died from her injuries.

Garrett was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action without bond, according to the release.

This is Springfield’s fifth homicide investigation this year.
