On Sunday night, HBO released a sizzle reel of its upcoming projects and teased the highly anticipated return of “The White Lotus.”

The Emmy Award-winning juggernaut from Emmy winner Mike White will head to Thailand for its third season. Season 1 star Natasha Rothwell returns to the show to connect the series to its previous entries. New cast members include Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Leslie Bibb, and 2024 Emmy nominees Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, and Parker Posey among many others.

As the brief clip ominously suggests: “What happens in Thailand stays in Thailand.”

“I can’t say anything. I literally can’t,” Rothwell told ET in December. “I will say, I’ve read all of the scripts and people are in for a treat. It’s bigger than ever. Buckle up.”

“The White Lotus” has been a reliable Emmy winner since its debut in 2021, first as a limited series and then as a drama series. All told, the show has been nominated for 43 Emmy Awards, including Best Limited Series (which it won) and Best Drama Series. The show has won 15 Emmys, including two for star Jennifer Coolidge and multiple awards for White. (Coolidge’s character was killed in the second season and is unlikely to appear in Season 3.)

“The White Lotus” Season 3 will debut in 2025.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 first look reveals Jeffrey Wright, Catherine O’Hara [Watch] https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/the-last-of-us-season-2-first-look-video/ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/the-last-of-us-season-2-first-look-video/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2024 13:30:04 +0000 https://www.goldderby.com/?p=1205904074 HBO saved the best for last.

On Sunday night, HBO and its sister streaming service Max released a lengthy teaser of the network’s upcoming programming, including a first look at the second season of “The Last of Us.”

In the new footage, an unnamed character played by Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara asks the show’s apparent angel of death, Joel Miller (Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal), a simple question: “What did you do?”

His response: “I saved her.”

As viewers of Season 1 remember, the truth is a bit more complicated. At the end of the breakout first season, Joel saved his traveling companion and de facto daughter, Ellie (Emmy nominee Bella Ramsay), from death by massacring several Firefly soldiers and doctors before they could use Ellie’s brain to find a cure for the Cordyceps outbreak that has all but ended humanity. (Ellie is somehow immune to the disease.) As fans of the blockbuster video game “The Last of Us Part II” remember, Joel’s actions will have long-lasting ramifications on him and Ellie. Season 2 of the HBO series will explore those consequences.

In addition to O’Hara – who is playing a character not created for the original game – the brief teaser includes glimpses of other new cast additions, including Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright (reprising his game role as Isaac), Emmy nominee Kaitlyn Dever (as fan-favorite character Abby), and Isabel Merced (as the character Dina). Gabriel Luna returns to play Joel’s brother, Tommy. Emmy nominee Young Mazino (“Beef”) and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” star Danny Ramirez are also in the cast for Season 2.

Season 1 of “The Last of Us” was a huge hit for HBO, landing 24 Emmy nominations last year, including Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Pascal, and Best Drama Actress for Ramsey. The show won eight Emmys, including the guest acting categories for Nick Offerman and Storm Reid

HBO did not specify when “The Last of Us” will return, but it will be sometime next year. The second season will run for seven episodes, it was previously reported, and won’t tell the entire story of “The Last of Us Part II” video game. Here’s co-creator Craig Mazin in an interview with Deadline:

“The story material that we got from ‘Part II’ of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”

He added, “We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too. We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”

‘Big Brother 26’ spoilers: Cedric remains indecisive while Tucker is very, very bored https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/big-brother-26-spoilers-tucker-veto-cedric-find-renom/ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/big-brother-26-spoilers-tucker-veto-cedric-find-renom/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2024 11:45:37 +0000 https://www.goldderby.com/?p=1205904003 Cedric didn’t know what to do about his third nominee on “Big Brother 26” and now he doesn’t know what to do about his renom.

Tucker won the Veto on Saturday, so Cedric is back to indecisive node trying to find someone to fill his spot on the block next to Angela and Kenney. But will it actually be Tucker he’s replacing? Bored by the state of the game, Tucker has stated multiple times he wants to shake things up, so he’s thinking about using the Veto on Angela and has pushed for a Quinn renom to flush out his power. He believes he’d beat Quinn in the AI Arena and if he didn’t, he’d expose Quinn’s power and note that Angela was telling the truth. This is all completely unnecessary, but Tucker is a chaos agent. But he’ll probaby take himself down in the end.

SEE ‘Big Brother 26’ spoilers: The Week 3 HOH doesn’t know who to nominate for the third spot

Tucker, Angela, Cedric, Kenney, Kimo and Cam currently know about Quinn’s power. Quinn has been given multiple opportunities to cop to his power, but he’s balked every time, even doubling down on insisting that Lisa had it. It’s even made the people who don’t know about his power come to the conclusion that he has it. What’s weirder, though, is when Angela lied to Chelsie and Brooklyn and said that Lisa had the power and told her about it. Angela doing the most again? Must be another day that ends with “y.”

Cedric has been leaning more towards flushing out Makensy‘s power than Quinn’s, but he’s such a waffler and so scared to make a move that he hasn’t committed to anything yet. He really wants to put up Leah, who encouraged him to make a decision for himself. The irony. If Cedric does put up Makensy, she’ll invoke her power and remove herself, and America will decide the renom.

‘Big Brother 26’ episode 9 recap: Who won Head of Household on August 4? [LIVE BLOG] https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/big-brother-26-episode-9-recap-head-of-household-august-4/ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/big-brother-26-episode-9-recap-head-of-household-august-4/#comments Mon, 05 Aug 2024 00:00:34 +0000 https://www.goldderby.com/?p=1205902161 Heading into the ninth episode of “Big Brother 26,” Lisa Weintraub had just been evicted live by an 11-to-1 vote over Angela Murray. Other than outgoing Head of Household Chelsie Baham, all of the remaining players were about to take place in the third HOH competition of the summer, with the winner being able to nominate three people for eviction. So how did it all play out on Sunday night?

Below, read our minute-by-minute “Big Brother” Season 26, Episode 9 recap/live blog to find out what happened Sunday, August 4, 2024 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. Then be sure to sound off in the comments section about your favorite “BB26” houseguests on CBS’s reality TV show, who annoys you the most and who you think will ultimately join the “Big Brother” winners list. Julie Chen Moonves once again hosts the series.

Here are the names of the 14 remaining houseguests: Angela Murray, Brooklyn Rivera, Cam Sullivan-Brown, Cedric Hodges, Chelsie Baham, Joseph Rodriguez, Kenney Kelley, Kimo Apaka, Leah Peters, Makensy Manbeck, Quinn Martin, Rubina Bernabe, T’kor Clottey and Tucker Des Lauriers.

Keep refreshing/reloading this “Big Brother 26” live blog for the most recent updates.

9:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘Big Brother’!” In the eighth episode, the A.I. Arena competition took place with Tucker pulling out a victory, saving himself from danger. The house then voted live to evict either Lisa or Angela, with everyone voting out Lisa except for Kenney. Lisa then told Julie in her exit interview that Angela “has been bullying me since the beginning.” Only 14 people remain in the game. Who will win HOH tonight?

9:01 p.m. – In the fallout of Lisa’s eviction, Chelsie felt like her reign wasn’t a waste because ultimately the house majority felt like Lisa was a bigger threat than Angela to win future comps. Even Angela was left out of the decision to save her and so she set a course for herself to “say low and see where it gets” her. That lasted as long as her tearful thanks speech to the house where she told them she’s “make them proud.”

9:05 p.m. – In order to crown the next Head of Household, the players competed as life-sized game pieces on the “Ainsley Land” board to race around the multiple balance beam paths. T’Kor went first, setting a top score of 9 points in 42.77 seconds. Quinn bested her with 18 points in 42.69 seconds. Kimo, Cam, Brooklyn, Rubina, Joseph, and Angela all failed to beat Quinn and then Makensy was on track to, but fell and lost to him as well. Cedric was up next and secured a new top score of 27 in 44.38 seconds.

9:22 p.m. – Kenney, Tucker, and Leah tried and failed to beat Cedric’s total and so he became the new HOH. One of the first conversations he had with houseguests was with Kenney where Cedric said that Angela is definitely going on the block and Kenney confessed to him his real occupation as a cop. Kenney added that if he goes on the block he’s okay with it because he misses his family and is okay being voted out so he can return to them.

9:34 p.m. – Looking a third nominee, Cedric’s chief concern was looking for the location of the two secret powers. Makensy told Cedric that he has one of the powers that can remove herself from the block as a way of scaring him from putting her up. When he talked to Chelsie about it, they considered that Leah is nervous and that she’s said Cedric’s name in the past so they may be working to put him up soon.

9:38 p.m. – Cedric brought up the concept of a pawn with Leah, but she said she’s “not too keen” on it and suggested that there are other people that might be down. Rubina and Joseph both shut the idea down as well.

9:45 p.m. – In the showmance check, everything currently was looking unrequited. Chelsie had her eyes on Cam, but Cam was busy competing for Leah’s attention with Quinn. Meanwhile, Leah’s eyes were caught on Tucker instead.

9:48 p.m. – In the eleventh hour, Tucker told Cedric that he’s willing to be the third nominee, but Cedric was concerned with a potential ally going home. That led the two of them to have a conversation with Kenney where the three of them discussed how close all the women are in the house and the potential for a female alliance. Both Kenney and Tucker wanted Cedric to put Makensy up in order to flush out her power now before they can use it against the guys.

9:55 p.m. – At the nomination ceremony, Cedric revealed the portraits of Angela, Kenney, and Tucker as his three nominees. He said that he wants Angela to compete, acknowledged that Kenney might want to leave, and that “we all know” Tucker isn’t the target.

‘American Idol’ Carrie Underwood will replace Katy Perry as Season 23 judge https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/american-idol-carrie-underwood/ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/american-idol-carrie-underwood/#respond Sun, 04 Aug 2024 21:00:57 +0000 https://www.goldderby.com/?p=1205900554 “American Idol” could be pulling from their own bank of superstar alum for Season 23. The hit ABC singing competition is reportedly negotiating a deal with Season 4 champ Carrie Underwood to replace pop singer Katy Perry on the judges’ panel. The Grammy winner would join Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, who have been mainstays since the show moved from FOX to ABC in 2018. Ryan Seacrest is expected to return as host.

Perry announced her departure from the show while appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in February. She was an integral part of the show’s successful transition to ABC and earned an estimated $25 million per season.

Underwood was just 21 years old when she auditioned for judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson in 2005. The Checotah, Oklahoma native wowed them with her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” before sailing through to the finale, where she defeated Bo Bice to become the fourth Idol, following Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino.

Underwood’s debut album “Some Hearts” hit shelves in November of 2005, selling over seven million copies and winning her the Grammy for Best New Artist. The country star has sold a reported 85 million records worldwide, won 8 Grammys, 17 American Music Awards, 16 ACM Awards and 25 CMT Awards.

The Season 22 finale of “American Idol” aired on May 19, 2024. Abi Carter defeated Will Moseley and Jack Blocker to claim the 2024 crown.

‘The Instigators’ reviews: Matt Damon and Casey Affleck star in ‘fun’ heist comedy with ‘real panache’ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/the-instigators-reviews-critics/ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/the-instigators-reviews-critics/#respond Sun, 04 Aug 2024 19:00:08 +0000 https://www.goldderby.com/?p=1205901435 The heist comedy “The Instigators” opened in theaters on August 2 from Apple Original Films, ahead of its streaming premiere on Apple TV+ on August 9. Starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as a pair of thieves on the run with a therapist (Hong Chau), the film is co-written by Affleck and Chuck MacLean, and directed by veteran action filmmaker Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity,” “Edge of Tomorrow”). What do critics think of it?

“The Instigators” has a MetaCritic score of 53 based on 16 reviews counted as of this writing. Six of those reviews are classified as positive, nine are somewhat mixed, and one is outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews simply as positive or negative with nothing in-between, the film is rated 50% fresh based on 24 reviews so far.

Tania Hussain (Collider) admires the film, saying that it “expertly blends the perfect mix of humor and action with some complex nuances for an entry that is one of the year’s most surprising comedies.” James Mottram (Total Film) also rates it highly, calling it “a tremendously entertaining crime caper” written with “real panache.” Ross McIndoe (Slant) says, “Affleck and Damon are very much in their comfort zone. They have an affably antagonistic chemistry that can be traced back to their ‘Good Will Hunting’ days.” Peter Debruge (Variety) agrees about the lead actors: “The movie works best in the downtime, when there’s wry, slightly combative banter between the two antiheroes.”

David Ehrlich (IndieWire) has mixed feelings about the film, calling it “flimsy in most respects but fun enough in its fumbling.” David Rooney (Hollywood Reporter) thinks the film has an inconsistent tone, and “it might have helped for a start if the script … had committed to being either an action thriller, a buddy comedy or a gritty crime drama.” Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) thinks Affleck is “at ease with the material,” but the film as a whole is only “passable.” Odie Henderson (Boston Globe), penning the only decisive pan on MC, says “The Instigators” “wastes the talents” of its cast.

But judging from the reviews as a whole, fans of Damon and Affleck may find enough appeal in their chemistry to make their heist worth undertaking.

Box office: ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ remains on top with nothing else coming close https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/box-office-deadpool-and-wolverine-trap/ https://www.goldderby.com/article/2024/box-office-deadpool-and-wolverine-trap/#respond Sun, 04 Aug 2024 17:30:31 +0000 https://www.goldderby.com/?p=1205903346 For more than 15 years studios have done their best to avoid releasing their new movies on the second weekend of a Marvel movie. This weekend we learned the reason why. Read on for the weekend box office report.

As expected, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman‘s “Deadpool and Wolverine” won its second weekend in a row, topping the box office with an estimated $97 million, down 54% from its record-setting opening weekend. Not only did “Deadpool and Wolverine” cross the $300 million milestone domestically this past weekend, but with $395.6 million grossed in North America, it’s only a day away from hitting the $400 million benchmark, so the race is on to see if it can catch up to Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”

Globally, the movie has passed the $800 million mark, adding another $110.5 million overseas this weekend for an international total of $428.5 million. With $824.1 million global, it has already passed the worldwide grosses of 2016’s “Deadpool” and 2018’s “Deadpool 2,” after just two weeks.

Warner Bros. decided to take its chances by releasing the high-concept thriller “Trap” from M. Night Shyamalan into 3,181 theaters, with Josh Hartnett, fresh off of last year’s “Oppenheimer,” playing a father taking his daughter to a concert that’s actually an FBI trap for a serial killer.

Warner Bros. chose not to screen the movie in advance for most film critics, which may have put many of them on the offensive when they had to pay to see the movie. That led to a pretty bad 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, as many reviewers had their knives out due to that corporate decision.

After making $2.2 million in Thursday previews, “Trap” wound up with $6.7 million on Friday (including those previews), and it ended up opening in third place behind “Twisters” with $15.6 million, averaging under $5,000 per location. The movie only cost $30 million to make, but it still needs to do decent business overseas to be profitable. “Trap” also received a “C+” CinemaScore, which is par for the course for horror and thrillers, as the hit “Longlegs” received the same audience score but continued to rack up business.

“Twisters” held up well with $22.7 million (down 35%), to take second place, bringing its domestic total to $195.6 million. It should pass the $200 million mark sometime in the next week, which would make it the fourth movie this summer and fifth movie this year to hit that mark.

Last week DreamWorks Animation’s “Despicable Me 4” became the fourth movie in the animated franchise to cross the $300 million mark, taking fourth place this weekend with $11.3 million, down just 23%, to bring its North American total to $314 million. It grossed another $26.9 million overseas this weekend to bring its international total to $438.3 million and global total to $752.2 million.

Pixar Animation’s own sequel, “Inside Out 2,” dropped just 19% to fifth place with $6.7 million. It has grossed $626.9 million domestically, which makes it the 12th highest-grossing movie domestically of all time. It’s slowly creeping up on last year’s mega-blockbuster “Barbie,” which ended up with $636.2 million domestic. Overseas, it added another $20.5 million, including a $4.9 million debut in Japan, so that brings its international total to $928.2 million and global total to $1.55 billion.

With two animated blockbusters still doing so well, it didn’t leave much room for Sony’s own family film “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” based on the popular children’s book by Crockett Johnson. Starring Zachary Levi, Zooey Deschanel, and Lil Rel Howery, Sony released the movie into 3,325 theaters on Friday, despite receiving terrible reviews with 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie made just $725,000 in Thursday previews and $2.5 million on Friday, including those previews, ending up with an estimated $6 million for the weekend, opening in sixth place. It also only made $3 million overseas in 32 markets, so yeah, Sony may have been wise in the decision to delay the movie for a year, though it did receive an “A-” CinemaScore, so clearly, families with small kids enjoyed it more than critics.

Osgood Perkins‘s horror-thriller “Longlegs,” which has become distributor Neon’s biggest blockbuster hit to date, added another $4.1 million this weekend to take seventh place, with $66.9 million domestic. The Nicolas Cage-starrer is creeping up on A24’s 2024 hit “Civil War,” as well as George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” both of which it should pass sometime this week.

Two indie movies getting a slow roll-out added more theaters, with Sean Wang‘s “Dìdi (弟弟)” taking in $440,000 this weekend in 47 locations, to bring its domestic total to $728,000. The Colman Domingo prison drama “Sing Sing” added another $173,000 in 18 locations to bring its total to $535,000. Both movies are expected to expand nationwide on August 16.

Almost two-thirds of players in the box office prediction game had Shayamalan’s “Trap” opening in second place and “Twisters” taking third, but it turned out to be the other way around. And roughly 110 players had “Harold” opening in the top five, which was also not the case. On the other hand, 90 players (roughly two-thirds) did have “Deadpool” winning the weekend with between $75 and $100 million, so that will help our users’ prediction scores.

The July 26 game had one of the best showings in a long time with 118 players getting all six predictions correct, but “dean317” and “DanC” were tied with the most points (49,450) with “Robert Chardello” just behind them.

On Friday Blake Lively stars in the romantic drama “It Ends With Us,” which will make a concerted play to dethrone her husband Ryan Reynolds’s blockbuster movie. You can read more about that in Wednesday’s weekend preview.

In “The Overview Effect”: Stella (Greta Lee) tells the TMS team about Paul’s (Jon Hamm) plan to sell the company. Alex (Jennifer Aniston) visits Bradley (Reese Witherspoon), who is paranoid that Paul is spying on her, and Bradley begs her to prevent the acquisition. Alex sends a text to Bradley that Paul later references, confirming that he has been surveiling her. Yanko (Néstor Carbonell) and Chris (Nicole Beharie) interview Chip (Duplass) on TMS and he publicly exposes Paul’s plan to dismantle UBA which, alongside efforts from Cory (Billy Crudup) and Cybil (Holland Taylor), helps to turn some of the voters on the board. Paul offers Cory money and the promise of clearing his name if he stops fighting the deal, but he declines.
