The Sioux City Public Museum will hold summer classes

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Opportunities at the Sioux City Public Museum to explore history through classes and family activities will be available this summer.

Classes on ancient games and pioneer life are available, along with hands-on opportunities for young children at Kid’s Thursdays. There will also be family tours to learn about local history.

The museum’s summer classes and programs will run from June 13th to July 25th. They are intended for children over the age of three.

Pre-registration is required for summer courses. Class sizes are limited; Advance payment is required to hold reservations unless otherwise noted. Registration forms can also be dropped off at the museum or mailed for a fee. Scholarships are available based on financial need. However, pre-registration is not required for family programs, including Children’s Thursdays and Family Outings.

Summer courses require advance registration. They are for children aged between 6 – 8 and 9 – 12 years.

Summer courses

Become an ancient player.

Here, participants can travel back in time to try out the oldest board games and create a version to take home.

It will take place on Tuesday 25 June between 9:00 and 11:30. Ages 8 to 12 can participate.

Stories and Trails: A Pioneer Adventure. Here, participants experience candle making, square dancing games, crafts and a STEM challenge.

This class will be available on Tuesday, July 23rd. The age 6-8 class will run from 9:00am to 11:30am and the age 9-12 class will run from 12:30pm to 3:00pm.

Programs for the family

Children’s Day. Here, adults and children will explore hands-on learning activity stations together in a supervised classroom setting.

This program will run from 10am to 11am on June 13th, June 27th, July 11th and July 25th.

On June 13, explore Sea Creatures – Big and Small; on June 27, go down to the farm; on July 11, see Monkeys, Dragons and Tacos; and July 25 is Dino’s Day.

Family trips. Here, attendees can explore some of Sioux City’s favorite historic sites with a free museum guide.

Tours are between 10:00 and 11:15

On June 9, there will be a walking tour of the Jackson Street neighborhood from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

On Friday, June 21, there will be a field trip to the War Eagle Monument and the Bruguier Cabin. Participants are asked to meet at the War Eagle Monument and then travel to the Bruguier Lodge in their own vehicles.

On Friday, July 19, there will be a field trip to the Floyd Monument and First Bride Tomb. Participants are also asked to meet at the Floyd Monument and then travel to the First Bride’s Grave in their own vehicle.
