More police this weekend for HPD’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Drivers who may find themselves navigating the Hub City this weekend may want to make sure they’re wearing their seat belts.

The Hattiesburg Police Department’s “Click-It-Or-Ticket” campaign will be in full swing, so drivers can expect an increased police presence on the road as well as additional safety checkpoints.

“So the general public thinks we’re just giving out citations, but what we’re really doing is getting drivers to wear seat belts and understand the safety of wearing seat belts,” HPD Officer Tyler said. McCann, who is part of the force’s Traffic Division.

HPD says wearing your seat belt during a crash can help keep the driver safe, as well as all passengers inside the vehicle.

If an accident occurs, the seat belt slows a person down, but spreads the impact forces over the strongest parts of the body.

“When you get into an accident, your seat belt is your best defense against drunk drivers, impaired drivers and distracted drivers,” McCann said.

However, the seat belt does not only protect in the event of an accident. Wearing one, especially this weekend, could also prevent a ticket.

The “Click-It-Or-Ticket” campaign will run until Sunday, June 2.
