Lupita Nyong’o says romance rumors with Jared Leto have affected their friendship

Lupita Nyong’o she wasn’t a fan of the romance rumors that came with her friendship Jared Leto.

In a new interview with gLAMORTHE A Quiet Place: Day One The actress reflects on the buzz surrounding her close friendship with the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman and the controversy that came with their hookup during the 2014 awards season.

“I didn’t pay any attention,” she tells the publication of the speculation. “I actually turned a deaf ear to all the awards talk because I was going through so many awards. The red carpet was new, everything was new to me.”

The Black Panther The 41-year-old star admits she “didn’t love” all the romance rumors and that it almost damaged her friendship with Leto.

“I can hit him about things; we see each other and it’s always a warm experience,” she says. “He was drawing attention away from work. I didn’t want that kind of attention. I didn’t want all that chatter to detract from the joy I had in becoming his friend.”

Both Nyong’o and Leto, 52, took home Best Supporting Actor Oscars for their roles in the respective films. 12 years a slave and Dallas Buyers Club. At the time, the pair has been photographed together during various events and ceremonies. However, they claimed that they are not dating.

Nyong’o revealed in October 2023 that she was in a “season of pain” following her breakup with Selema Masekela. In December 2023, Nyong’o sparked dating rumors with Joshua Jacksonwho had recently separated from his ex-wife, Jodie Turner-Smith.

The pair were last seen together in March during a PDA-filled vacation in Mexico. Neither Nyong’o nor Jackson have ever confirmed a romance.

In the gLAMORthe actress admits that despite sharing the deeply personal side of her last relationship and breakup, she wouldn’t do it on the public stage again.

“I’m very happy with what I did and I don’t want to do it again,” she told the press. “I don’t want to share that part of me anymore.”
